Centenary of World War I [fr]
November 11, 2018 marks the centenary of the Armistice of the Great War on the Western front. This commemoration will be marked by several important events in France and all over the world. The culmination will be an international ceremony to be led by French President Emmanuel Macron at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, in the presence of over a hundred foreign dignitaries, and which will formally open the Paris Peace Forum.
Two events will take place in Manila: on Thursday, November 8, French Ambassador Nicolas Galey will deliver a speech on the meaning of the commemoration of the war in Paris, Berlin, or Manila at the University of the Philippines-Diliman. It will be followed by talks by two renowned Filipino historians on the different aspects of the First World War and the screening of the French film La Grande Illusion (The Grand Illusion), a global cinematic masterpiece filmed in 1937 by Jean Renoir.
On November 9, Ambassador Galey will participate in a commemorative event at the Eurocampus, a symbol of the Franco-German friendship and cooperation in the Philippines, where he will speak about the duty of remembering – as the witnesses and actors of the Great War are no longer living – especially at this time where Europe questions its future.
