French moot competition against the death penalty

JPEG In the heart of the fight for the defense of human rights, lawyers play an essential role in the progression of thought on the abolition of the death penalty in countries where this form of punishment remains legalized. It is for this reason that this year, a moot competition has been organized by the Department, in partnership with the International Organisation of La Francophonie, the National Bar Council of France, and International Bar Association (Francophone bar), and the Ensemble contre la peine de mort (ECPM) Association, in accordance with the priorities set by the Ministry.

This competition aims to educate and mobilize young Francophone lawyers (with less than 10 years of experience) on the death penalty. National competitions have been organized in 8 countries : Algeria, Burkina Fasso, Cameroon, Lebanon, Morocco, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tunisia, and Benin, and will be completed by an online competition open worldwide.

The first prize of each national contest is an all expenses paid invitation to participate in the international finals in Paris.

Young Francophone lawyers enlisted on the principal list or on the internship list for less than 10 years may participate in the worldwide online competition. To participate, the candidates are invited to submit, by email, a written oral argument of 1,000 to 2,500 words on the defense of an actual case of a death sentence. A jury composed of legal professionals will select the winner.

The international finals, which will take place in Paris on October 8 and 9, 2015, will gather the 8 winners of the national competitions and the 2 to 4 winners of the worldwide online competition. This will be followed by a capacity building workshop led by experienced lawyers who have defended cases of persons on death row.

The first prize of the international finals will be an invitation to serve on the jury of the competition of the International Bar Conference in Cotonou in December 2015. The other participants will receive prizes from the partners of the competition.

Candidates must submit their applications by email (concours.abolition@gmail.com) not later than August 31, 2015:

- Oral argument (in Word format)
- Proof of inscription to the bar
- Copy of an ID
