His Excellency Mr. Thierry MATHOU

Ambassador of the Republic of France to the Philippines and Non-Resident Ambassador to Palau, the Federated States of Micronesia and the Marshall Islands

A graduate of the Paris Institute of Political Studies and EDHEC Business School, Ambassador Thierry Mathou obtained a PhD in Political Science and Asian Studies before joining the Diplomatic Service in 1989. Since then, he has been posted in the United States and China. He also served as Deputy Director of the Department for International Economic and Financial Affairs at the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2004 to 2006. Prior to his posting in the Philippines, he was Ambassador of France to Myanmar from 2011 to 2015.

Besides being a career diplomat, Ambassador Mathou is also a scholar specialising in Asian Affairs, particularly China and Himalayan Studies. He is associated with the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS). He is fluent in several Asian languages.

Born on March 8, 1963, Ambassador Mathou is married and has three children. He has been named Chevalier (Knight) of the highest decoration in France, the National Order of the Legion of Honour.
