Tribute to Bernardo Sim, President of the Alliance Française de Manille [fr]
It is with great sorrow that the Embassy of France and the Alliance Française de Manille announce the passing last Saturday, August 5, of Mr. Bernardo Sim, President of the Alliance Française de Manille.
His passing is a loss of a strong and precious support for this institution, which he led the first time from 2003 to 2009, and again from 2012 onwards. With much generosity and humility, he contributed patiently and ardently to the Alliance Française that we know today.
Our compatriots, with his death, we have lost a true and devoted friend who has done so much in the Philippines to promote the French language and culture, a love for which he found to express his passion for French wines.
In addition to having been an accomplished businessman, this Francophile and Francophone was also a licensed wine expert, have presided over the International Society of Wine and Food for a certain period. Nothing made him happier than to share and converse over a good glass of wine with friends, who learned much from his extensive knowledge on oenology and many other subjects.
To such an extent, his love for life would make us forget his fragile health brought about by Parkinson’s disease, against which he fought strongly and courageously for many years.
Today, deeply saddened by his passing, we wish to express our condolences to his family and loved ones, to pay tribute to him, to show our gratitude, and, from the bottom of our hearts, thank him for the tireless and important acts he dedicated to strengthening cultural and human exchanges between France and the Philippines, for which he was recognized in 2013 with the rank of Chevalier (Knight) in France’s National Order of the Legion of Honor.
