University of the Philippines Los Baños joins the Grease Network [fr]
French-Philippine cooperation in the field of scientific research takes a step forward as the University of the Philippines-Los Baños has recently been named as an associate partner of the Gestion des Risques Emergents en Asie du Sud-Est (GREASE) Network.
GREASE is a regional network that aims to support research activities concerning the management of emerging epidemic risks in Southeast Asia. This involves a range of disciplines such as veterinary medicine, public health, ecology, economics, sociology, geography, modelling sciences, and biostatistics.
The network provides scientific and institutional support to facilitate interactions between various stakeholders including:
Scientists from Southeast Asia and worldwide;
Decision-makers from national veterinary services and institutes and international agencies;
Local actors such as farmers, market chains operators, local authorities, NGOs and community representatives
Currently, it consists of a consortium of 6 national research centers in Southeast Asia, together with the French Centre de Coopération Internationale en Recherche Agronomique pour le Développement (CIRAD). The country members include Cambodia, the Philippines, France, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia.
The regular discussions and activities led by the Embassy of France with the School of Environment Sciences and Management of UPLB greatly facilitated the integration of the school into the network, making the Philippines the only country in the region to have 2 institutional partners in Grease. Central Mindanao University (CMU) joined the network in 2012.
