French expert Emeric Faure, Chief Maritime Affairs Officer, was welcomed on November 21 by the Philippine Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA), where he will lead a technical assistance mission whose main tasks are the acceleration of the modernization program of the shipbuilding sector and the domestic fleet, the establishment of new maritime routes for freight transport, and the promotion of the participation of the public and private sectors in the development and operations of domestic freight infrastructure. This position of international technical expert provided to MARINA by Expertise France was created by the General Directorate of the Treasury.

Mr. Faure’s mission is part of the bilateral cooperation between France and the Philippines in the maritime sector, which led to the signing of a memorandum of understanding on November 8 by the administrator of MARINA, Mr. Hernani N. Fabia, and the head of the economic service of the French Embassy in the Philippines Mr. Olivier Ginépro. The text provides for the strengthening of bilateral cooperation in order to promote the implementation of MARINA’s Maritime Industry Development Program (MIDP), one of the main objectives of which is to strengthen maritime safety in the Philippines.

As a maritime nation in the Indo-Pacific, where more than 90% of its EEZ is concentrated, France has made cooperation in the maritime sector one of its priority areas of cooperation with the Philippines, an archipelago strategically located in the heart of this area.
